My prosthesis is very heavy. Can I wear a “softie” all the time?

This is not recommended as your weight would not be evenly distributed which could cause you to lean to one side and possibly lead to curvature of the spine.

Will my prosthesis perish?

Sweat can cause the silicone to breakdown so it is particularly important to follow the care instructions issued with your prosthesis. If you follow the instructions they should last a long time, but it does depend on the type of prosthesis and the manufacturer. Your doctor will be able to advise you on how long you can expect your individual prosthesis to last.

Do I have to pay for a prosthesis?

Not always. If you have undergone surgery with the NHS you are entitled to a free prosthesis every 2 to 3 years depending on the individual hospital authority, who you should contact for more information.

Pocketed bras can be expensive. Is there any funding available to help towards the costs?

Yes. MacMillan Cancer Support offer a means-tested grant scheme. This is a one off payment of £285 which can be used towards costs incurred as a result of their diagnosis. For further information please contact MacMillan on 0808 808 0000 or click here.

I’m experiencing skin sensitivity whilst undergoing radiotherapy. What can I do?

Dry, tender or sore skin is a normal side effect to the treatment. Many patients find it uncomfortable to wear anything close fitting post-op. Certain bras have been designed specifically with this in mind – the Anita Salvia for example. The soft padded straps and wide underband in this and similar post-surgery bras are both lined with soft towelling fabric to minimise pressure on the body and are very effective at alleviating discomfort.

I’m experiencing increased sweating and odour. Is this normal?

This is quite common, so don’t worry. A side effect to some of the medication used in the treatment of breast cancer can result in excess sweating and subsequent odour. Wearing a cotton-lined bra will help as would wearing a ridged rather than flat back prosthesis, such as the Anita Active Ocean or the Amoena Aquawave. These breast forms are generally worn as a swimming prosthesis but can also be worn in your bra as well.

Do I need to go up a band size following my surgery?

Some patients will experience post-surgery swelling for a few weeks and in these instances we would suggest a bigger band size. If you are experiencing discomfort, it is likely once the swelling has subsided you will revert to your original size.

How soon can I be fitted for a breast prosthesis after a mastectomy?

Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate wait for you to be fitted for and start wearing a prosthesis after the surgery is complete. The timescale will depend upon the type of mastectomy that was performed, your condition and the post-operative healing process.

Why is it important to wear a properly-fitting bra prior to going to the breast care clinic to acquire a prosthesis?

The size of the prosthesis you receive will be determined by the volume of the bra cup on your best-fitting bra, so the remaining breast should be fitted correctly into a bra which should then be worn to your appointment.

Can I wear a wired bra after surgery?

It’s fine to wear a wired bra post-surgery provided that: 1. Your surgeon agrees 2. The bra is fitted correctly and 3. The appropriately shaped prosthesis is worn.

Will people be able to tell I’m wearing a prosthesis?

No. With a properly fitted prosthesis and a mastectomy bra, nobody will be able to notice.

Do I have to have a mastectomy bra?

We strongly advise it. Mastectomy bras are the best choice for a breast form (prosthesis) because they have specially designed pockets in the cups to hold the prosthesis in place and are generally cut wider under the arm and across the chest for better coverage.

Post-surgery Bras: Information for Customers

The various post-surgery (also known as mastectomy) bras available on the market today are as wide and varied as the regular bras you’ll be used to seeing on the high street, but they all have one thing in common that sets them apart from standard bras: spandex stretch pockets on the inside of the cup, specially designed to keep the breast prosthesis in place.

Aside from that, each post-surgery bra will have its own special features, affording you a wealth of options to choose from when selecting the right bra (or bras) for you and your individual lifestyle. Whether you require the support you’d expect from a high-quality sports bra or desire the elegant sensuality of a beautiful lace bra, there are a wealth of styles and designs for you to choose from – probably many more than you were expecting!

Saffron Lingerie understand that selecting and fitting the appropriate prosthesis and mastectomy bra that meets your specific needs and the prospect of the day-to-day wearing of your new bras can be a weight on your mind. Hopefully this page will alleviate some of that stress and answer some of your questions.

We consulted with medical professionals who have years of experience with regards to post-mastectomy clothing in order to get the best answers to some of your most frequently asked questions.

If your particular concern is not addressed here, please contact us and we will do our utmost to answer your question or refer you to a suitable authority on the subject.

Do you do fittings for starter/nursing/mastectomy bras?

I’ve had a fitting before. Do I need another one?

As your bra size can change throughout your life we recommend having your size checked every six months. It’ll only take a minute for us to tell you if the bra you’re wearing fits!

Will you measure me?

We won’t use a tape measure for the simple reason that that method of ‘fitting’ doesn’t really work. All bras and brands can fit differently so we won’t give you a single size as it may not be consistent; instead we will use our expertise to fit you for each individual bra. (We will also be able to give you a ‘general’ size!)

Do I need to make an appointment for a fitting?

There is no need to make an appointment for a fitting, just come in at a time that is convenient for you.

Do I have to pay for a fitting?

No, there is no charge for a bra fitting.

Can I have a bra fitting in your shop?

Yes, you certainly can! Our trained staff will be happy do a fitting for you, so please just ask.

I’m looking for the Playtex 18hr range?

We charge a £20 deposit for items ordered in, which will be refunded whether or not you then purchase the item. You can call ahead to check if we have an item in stock or ask us to order one in for you (01785 225 968). I can’t find the style I always have?

Occasionally brands discontinue certain products or styles. If you’re looking for an old favourite but it’s not on our website or in our shop, please don’t hesitate to ask or contact us. If it is discontinued we will do our best to direct you to an alternative similar style.

I can’t find my size in your shop?

Many of our sizes and styles are kept in drawers rather than on display in the shop, as we simply don’t have room to put them all out! If you can’t find what you are looking for please don’t presume we don’t have it – just ask a member of staff and we’ll be happy to assist you!

I can’t find my size on your website?

We usually stock sizes from a 28-48 band, A-K cup via a range of brands. This means that not every item will be made in every size. Similarly, if your size is not 28-48/A-K, please get in touch. We will be only too happy to use the same knowledge and experience to try to find your ideal set.

What’s your price range?

We aim to offer gorgeous, good quality lingerie at every price point. Our more affordable bras currently start at £14 with Lepel London, and we also stock high-end brands like Prima Donna and Marie Jo – and then there is mid-range, with everything in between!
